A week of excuses #7: The truth is...
The best excuse is none, because the details of nothing are hard to follow up on, and your story can't be later crossed up by some off-hand comment. Effecting a no-excuse is possible in a number of ways, but the best one is the truth. "The truth is simply too embarrassing, I'm sorry but I hope you'll respect my privacy here." Speculation will run rampant after such a statement, but (unless you're a real asshole) you'll probably have some defenders who will ask that your privacy indeed be respected. The cool thing about unspoken truth is that... well, it's unspoken.
