Did you remember to buy a gift?  OK...

• Was it worse than theirs?  How thoughtless of you.

• Was it better than theirs?  Great, now you've made them feel bad about their gift.

• Was it the same thing?  Terrific, just like going out for groceries - no need to even exchange gifts.

Seriously, did you think there was any way you were going to do the right thing on an artificial holiday based on a pagan festival then co-opted by the church to celebrate two martyrs, and finally ratified as part of the American calendar by people who make holiday cards?
