Unrelated statistics
We sit down to the paper this morning and read two sets of statistics that, while unrelated, were thought provoking. (And we do like to provoke those thoughts, though it's usually by poking them with a stick and calling them childish names...)
First is the fact that the US population has hit the 300,000,000 mark. How about that kids, much easier to remember the next time some goon from a TV show sticks their microphone in your face and asks you to embarrass yourself on national TV? The really interesting thing here was the statistics that lead to growth. That's the fact that someone is born in the US every 7 seconds, someone dies every 13 seconds, and there's a new immigrant every 31 seconds (not sure if that 700 mile fence would factor in there...)
The second comes from one of our favorite sources for hard, fair, news: Doonesbury. The terrorist attacks on 9/11 killed 3,000 people, but since that time nearly 15,000 domestic citizens have been killed with guns. Guess that's more acceptable, given we're doing that to ourselves.
And while we're on Doonesbury, we offer this link to "The Sandbox." By way of description:
And that makes for some interesting, non-statistical reading.
Hoo-rah!
