50 years ago today...
Our congress decided that all the coins of the realm should be emblazoned with "In God We Trust." Weren't the 50s a wonderful time of simplicity, innocence and creeping religious influence on government? Why God has anything to do with the filthy lucre of Mammon is a question we won't go into here.
This proposal was shortened from the more actionable recommendation of "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" obviously a more reasonable motto in context.
