New Month, Old Thought

Gotta admit, this one actually came to light in a recent appearance by Sir Ian McKellen. In light of the Bush move to a constitutional amendment, gay old Gandalf quoted Thomas Jefferson.  Read this through carefully, it's truly inspiring and timely:

I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.

Must remember to get that last sentence printed on a t-shirt.

Fucking amazing that we need the British to remind us what democracy and liberty are all about...

 

 That there are so many pinheads who want to retard the growth of society, to have it remain under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors is just too apt a description for the religious right and their wannabe good-ole-boy president. Barbarous ancestors hell, they're still ignorant barbarians ruled by superstition and the need to control others lives through any doubletalk possible.
